The opening of Enlightened Universe gave the opportunity to HRVP Federica Mogherini and UN Barbara Pesce Montero to stress the shared values and the importance of working together to make the world a better place. Cristobal Gabarron highlighted the role of each citizen to contribute to this effort which he does impressively through his art and through his work with children.
I had the opportunity to give to our main guests copies of children drawings on human rights made during the workshop in Brussels.
24 October 2016
To commemorate United Nations Day, a monumental art installation by Spanish artist Cristóbal Gabarrón was unveiled on 24 October 2016 at the Rotonde du Mont-Blanc in Geneva.
The installation, titled Enlightened Universe, is an interactive sculpture depicting 70 life-size figures joined in hand around a central globe, creating a human chain of global citizenship, solidarity, tolerance, respect for nature, and shared responsibility. It was originally created for the 70th anniversary of the United Nations in 2015. Geneva is the installation’s first stop in Europe after its inaugural exhibition last year in New York’s Central Park. Enlightened Universe will travel to other European cities in 2017 and 2018.
In advance of the Human Rights day, 40 schoolchildren took part in a workshop with Cristóbal Gabarrón. Finding inspiration in the figurines created by the artist for his installation, the children reflected on people’s human rights, integrating notions of respect, tolerance and solidarity.
10 March 2017, the III International Congress of Art, Architecture and Heritage – Space and Landscape ‘Homage to Siza’, was organized by the International Chair of the Arts, ‘Cristóbal Gabarrón’ and the Degree in Architecture of the Catholic University of Murcia.
“Siza is a titan of the 20th century and a great architect of the 21st century. It is a luxury to work with a creator of this magnitude”. This is how Cristóbal Gabarrón, president of the Cristóbal Gabarrón Foundation, defines Álvaro Siza – the famous architect who is honored at the III International Congress of Art, Architecture and Heritage.
